How To Start A Consistent And Exciting Workout Routine

Do you want to start working out again but you haven’t always been consistent when you did it in the past? Are you a busy parent or entrepreneur with so many responsibilities that you wonder if you’ll ever have a consistent and exciting workout routine? If so, this post is for you because I’ll discuss realistic yet still fun ways to build the best routine that works well for you. Here is how you can build a consistent and exciting workout routine.

Start With Activities You Like

You don’t need to buy a treadmill if you find this activity boring. It’s not necessary to exercise off traditional aerobics videos to get in shape. If you prefer dancing, create a music playlist with your favorite songs and dance in your room or the backyard daily for 30 minutes to an hour. Or if you enjoy walks or jogs around the neighborhood, explore a different neighborhood in your city near your home each week.

Set Aside A Dedicated Time for Exercise

Another way to build consistency in your workout routine is to schedule a dedicated time for it daily. When I started working out, I chose the hours between 10 p.m. and midnight because I have a highly active daughter and I knew that the best time for me was this timeframe because it was the only time I could exercise alone without distractions. As long as you’re consistent, any schedule will do.

Buy Fun Workout Clothes

Add some pizzazz to your workout routine by adding fun workout clothes to your wardrobe. When you put on comfortable and cute workout clothes, it gives you an incentive to remain consistent with your daily exercise. Wear workout clothes that are breathable since you’ll sweat a lot during your sessions.

Think About Why You’re Exercising

Without solid fitness goals and a clear purpose, it will be hard to build a consistent and exciting workout routine. Write down realistic fitness goals and your reasons for working out. For example, your fitness goals may include losing two to three pounds a week, increasing your consumption of fruits and vegetables, reducing your consumption of junk food, and building muscle mass.

Make The Kids Your Accountability Partners

When I started working out, my daughter was excited about it. She became my designated personal trainer and she always reminded me when it was time for exercise. She is an active girl who dances and practices tumbles every day so she couldn’t wait to keep me on track. She even gave me pointers during the exercises. Your kids have natural enthusiasm so use it to boost support.

Don’t Start With Long and Intense Workouts

As you build a more consistent and exciting workout routine, don’t immediately start with long and intense workouts. Instead, start with short high-intensity workouts to get you used to your new routine. Over time, gradually increase the time and intensity of your workouts as needed.

Walk To Errands

If you live near your errands, walk instead of drive there. Walking has great health benefits. Walking can relieve stress and it clears your mind for a better mood. Walking also reduces joint pain, boosts your immune system, and may even assist with coming up with fresh ideas.

Do Some Desk Exercises

Many of us have sedentary lifestyles thanks to the nature of our jobs being centered around computers and desks. There are desk exercises you can do during short breaks from work during the day. Some examples include desk pushups, squats, calf raises, desk planks, and lunges. This helps you squeeze in a workout on days when you can’t do your usual routine.

Add Housework to Your Fitness Routine

Housework can burn calories too, so why not use it to your advantage? Grab your spouse and kids and finally deep clean the basement after so many months of putting it off. When you’re done with that task, head to the kitchen and declutter your refrigerator and cabinets before organizing them. Finally, you can deep clean all the bathrooms.

Play Old-School Childhood Games

Introduce your kids to old-school childhood games you played as a kid such as tag, dodgeball, jump rope, hopscotch, and playing frisbee. These are active games that help you lose weight and bond with your child.

Don’t Sabotage Your Workouts With An Unhealthy Diet

So now you have a consistent and exciting routine and you notice progress. Don’t undermine your hard work with an unhealthy diet. Supplement your exercise with balanced meals. Practice portion control and cut back on processed foods, junk food, and fast food. One idea is to batch-cook a few healthy meals and freeze them to eat on nights when you’re unable to cook.

Find Fun Workout Videos on Youtube

I got tired of the same boring workouts so I found a few fun dance-based workouts on Youtube. I had so much fun it didn’t feel like exercise. Sometimes I’ll mute the exercise video, turn on my Spotify playlist, and exercise off those songs while still watching the workouts. It did wonders for my exercise routine.

These strategies can get you started on the right path toward a consistent and exciting workout routine. Be patient with yourself and don’t feel bad if you miss one or two days. As long as you get back on track, you’ll succeed in reaching your fitness goals.
